DISC for Real Life: Talking to People Who Aren’t Like You

That colleague who drives you up the wall might just have a different style. DISC gives you the language to bridge it.

We all have someone at work who seems to speak a different language. You want the big picture; they want the details. You want to talk it through; they want the bottom line, now.

Very often it isn’t a personality clash. It’s a style difference, and DISC makes it visible.

The four styles, in plain English

  • D (Dominance): Direct, decisive, results-first. Give them the headline.
  • I (Influence): Enthusiastic, people-focused, energized by ideas. Give them connection.
  • S (Steadiness): Calm, loyal, collaborative. Give them time and reassurance.
  • C (Conscientiousness): Precise, analytical, quality-focused. Give them data.

Everyone has a blend. Knowing your primary style, and recognizing others’, is where things get practical.

A simple adaptation exercise

Before your next tough conversation, ask: “What style is this person, and what do they need from me to hear this well?” Then adjust one thing: your pace, your level of detail, or how much you lead with the relationship versus the result.

Small adaptations create dramatically better conversations. That’s why DISC is one of my favorite tools for managers, client-facing teams and anyone navigating a tricky working relationship.
