Lead From Your Strengths, Not Your Gaps
Most development plans fixate on weaknesses. CliftonStrengths flips the script, and the best leaders use it on purpose.
Think back to your last performance review. If it was like most, the bulk of the conversation focused on what you need to fix. It’s well-meant, but it’s rarely where breakthrough performance comes from.
The case for strengths
Gallup’s CliftonStrengths is built on a simple idea: people grow most in their areas of greatest natural talent. When you understand your top themes, you can design how you work, lead and communicate to play to them.
Your weaknesses rarely hold you back as much as your unused strengths do.
How to put your strengths to work this week
- Name them. Write your top five themes somewhere you’ll see them daily.
- Spot them in action. At the end of each day, note one moment you used a strength well.
- Watch for overuse. Every strength has a shadow. Focus can become tunnel vision; harmony can become conflict avoidance.
- Share them. Tell your team your strengths and ask about theirs. It changes how you divide work.
Strengths aren’t an excuse
Leading from strengths doesn’t mean ignoring gaps. It means managing them, through partnerships, systems or simple awareness, while investing most of your energy where you can be exceptional.
