Balance Is the Wrong Goal. Aim for Alignment.
Perfect balance across every area of life isn’t realistic. Alignment is, and it changes how you spend your energy.
Ask a room of high achievers whether their life is “balanced” and you’ll get a lot of polite laughter. Between leading teams, caring for family and trying to remember the last time you slept eight hours, balance can feel like a myth.
Here’s the reframe I share with clients: balance is the wrong goal. Alignment is the right one.
Why balance keeps failing you
Balance implies every area of life gets equal time and attention all the time. Real life doesn’t work that way. A product launch, a new baby or a health scare will rightly pull your focus. Chasing equal distribution just adds guilt to an already full plate.
What alignment looks like
Alignment means your time and energy match what matters most to you in this season, and nothing important is silently falling apart. Some areas will be in a sprint, others in maintenance mode. That’s fine, as long as it’s a choice.
Three questions to check your alignment
- What season am I in? Name it: building, recovering, transitioning, leading through change.
- What has to be protected? Usually health and one or two key relationships.
- What can be “good enough” for now? Give yourself permission, out loud.
This is exactly the thinking behind the OLV Assessment. It shows you the whole picture so you can choose where to focus, instead of trying to fix everything at once.
