Emotions & Meaning
Stay steady, feed your spirit, and live with purpose.
Emotions & Meaning is about how steady you feel, how you handle hard moments, and your sense of meaning or faith. Steady means you can feel a hard emotion and still choose how you respond.
The OLV Assessment also asks how often you make time for what feeds your spirit. Faith, prayer, meditation, reflection, gratitude, and time in nature all count. When this area is strong, you bounce back faster and bring more energy to everything else on your wheel.
Why it matters
A review of 10 studies with more than 136,000 people found that a higher sense of purpose in life was linked to about a 17% lower risk of death from any cause.
Half of employees in the U.S. and Canada (50%) said they felt a lot of stress during the previous day.
Quick self-check
- On a scale of 1 to 10, how satisfied are you with your Emotions & Meaning right now?
- In the last 2 weeks, how often have you felt calm and steady?
- How often do you make time for what feeds your spirit?
If you felt calm and steady about half the time or less, or you feed your spirit less than every week, start with the quick wins below.
Ideas to level up
Quick wins (this week)
- Write 3 things you're grateful for before you check your phone, 5 mornings this week.
- Try a 10-minute guided meditation or prayer on Insight Timer.
- Use a 3-breath reset when a hard feeling hits: take three slow breaths, name the feeling, then choose your next action.
90-day moves
- Build a 10-minute morning practice 5 days a week: journal, pray, or meditate.
- Take a walk outside every week with no earbuds and no phone calls.
- Pick one pattern you're letting go of and write your "Instead, I will..." plan on a card you see every day.
- Read Man's Search for Meaning and write one page on what gives your life meaning right now.
Big-vision goals
- Review your personal mission statement every Sunday and let it guide your week.
- Work with a licensed therapist or coach on something you've been carrying for a while.
- Join or start a faith or growth group that meets every week.
Sample SMART goals
- Journal or pray for 10 minutes, 5 mornings a week, through March 31.
- Meditate for 10 minutes a day for 30 days in a row starting Monday, and track it in Insight Timer.
- Take a 45-minute nature walk every Saturday for the next 12 weeks.
